Bill Gates
William Henry "Bill" Gates III was born on 28 October 1955 in Seattle, Washington. He is also known as the author and chairman of Microsoft, which he founded with Paul Allen. Bill Gates is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest men. Microsoft first started when Bill, after reading the 'Popular Electronics' January 1975 issue, contacted creators of MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) and informed them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform. The demonstration was a success and they got a deal to distribute the interpreter as Altair Basic. Paul Allen was hired into MITS and they begun their partnership on November 1975. They named their partnership 'Micro-Soft', but within a year the hyphen was dropped and the trade name 'Microsoft' was created.
Then IBM approached them for its upcoming personal computer IBM PC, which resulted in adapting 86-DOS operating system into Microsoft. Bill became the president of Microsoft and chairman of the board.
On 20 November 1985, Microsoft launched its 1st retail version of Microsoft Windows, and in August, struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system called OS/2. Microsoft then shift to develop Windows NT kernel.
He stepped down as CEO of Microsoft in January 2000 but remained as chairman and created the position of chief software architect. Now, he remains as non-executive chairman.
